History behind The Alliance
For more than twenty years, Pike has been the fastest growing county in Pennsylvania. Because of our proximity to New York and Philadelphia, analysts predict that our population will double or triple within the next 20 to 30 years.

Without an effective strategy to contain these population pressures, Pike County is likely to lose much of its rural character and scenic beauty by the same process that has overwhelmed so many towns in nearby New York and New Jersey.

The economic boom of the 1990’s and a new period of urban flight driven by 9/11 have led to increasing numbers of new residents from New York and New Jersey. Land that seemed relatively secure from development for the last decade is now rising rapidly in value as it attracts new interest from developers. Without dramatic changes in conservation planning, and infrastructure improvements, doubling our population will consume 6-9 times as much land as is currently developed.

Faced with this information a group of concerned citizens from across the community met in the summer of 2003 to discuss what could be done. Out of these initial meetings, the Alliance to Keep Pike Green was born.

A good first step: The Alliance to Keep Pike Green was instrumental in the placement of a Planning and Conservation Bond Referendum by the Pike County Commissioners on the November 2005 ballot. That bond issue passed successfully by a 68% majority in Nov. 2005. Since the successful passage of the Scenic Rural Character Preservation (SRCP) Bond , several significant steps have been taken to see that these funds are put to good use. In Sept. 2006, the Pike County Commissioners voted to finance over the next three years the amount of $1.2 million of the $10 million received.

This amount will be used for three purposes: The first is to start the Pike Agricultural Land Preservation Program.

The second is to provide technical planning assistance for municipalities through a grant process officially launched on Oct. 18th, with letters of intent due before the end of 2006 and grant applications due in March of 2007.

The third is to institute a grant process to allocate the Bond funds for land and easement acquisition, a project the SRCP Board is currently pursuing.
